A Fall Haiku and the Oregon Scenes

A Fall Haiku:

「名月や 池をめぐりて 夜もすがら」

      The bright full moon
      Walking around the pond
      All night long

                    by BASHO (芭蕉)

Maple leaves began to change the color.

Mums are now in bloom.

 A return of Golden-crowned Sparrows

All are the indications of our fall.

One Kind of a Chicken - KFC in Kashgar

In Downtown Kashugar, a big screen TV on the building watches over the heavy traffic with many motor bikes.

Everybody rides a motorbike there.  And there are many dressed-up, high-heeled women riders, too.

At one corner of the square, you will find a variety of fruits.   Find some different melon?

Here is something familiar: the origin of our bagels.   Notice one yuan Chinese money (Mr. Mao) for one bagel.

And you will also find our famous KFC.

Chinese people love to eat Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Up on a Mosque - Kashgar, and Urumqi, China

At Kashgar, the northwestern edge of China bordering with Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhfstan, Uygur people, descendants of ancient Turkish tribes, have lived for centuries.   Hundreds of years ago, the area religion was changed from Buddhism to Islam.  Chinese Muslims (Uygur) are gentle folks.

Up on the front of the famous Grand Aidkah Mosque, doves gathered, observing people's daily activities.

Uygur writing is similar to Arabian.

In Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Autonomous District、we stopped over at International Bazaar, where white doves flew away from a mosque rooftop.

There are a lot of doves wherever you go in China.

More Pet Birds in Beijing, China

Beijing is a huge metropolis. Today many people live in skyscraper apartment/condos while still some prefer to stay in an old-fashioned Hutong neighborhood as long as their goverment does not demolish it.

At our Courtyard Inn (四合院), there were two kinds of birds chirping in the inner courtyard.

Budgies:   The male on the left was singing away most of the time.

Cockatiels: they sometimes chattered in a quiet manner.

Chinese people just love to keep birds around.

Newly Found Friends - in China

While I was away from home, I met a new bird friend in Downtown Beijing.

Name: Painted Eyebrow (huamei,画眉)

Notice cute ceramics seed and water bowls.

One morning we were strolling near a small park where several retired men were visiting with one another while these birds were singing away to their heart's content.

Once my Chinese language teacher told me one of the traditional hobbies of men in China is to keep a pet bird while women tend to take care of a flower garden.

A Busy Day - Feeling Good

The summer vacation is now over.  Schools have just started.  Today everyone seems to be quite busy.

So with the bees working on the last sunflower in my backyard.

So with the young Scrub Jay scratching the neck on the apple tree branch in the morning sun.

So with the young Anna's Hummingbird also scratching the neck on a clothesline.

They are all feeling good in the left-over summer sunshine.

I will be busy with other errands for a couple of weeks, but I will be back to the bird watching/blog writing soon.  Enjoy your fall weather.
