Return to My Backyard

The blueberry bushes are changing their colors.  Autumn has now arrived.

There's another sign of autumn in my backyard.  A Song Sparrow returned.  He visits here every morning from autumn thru spring.

"That's me.  The autumn breeze just brought me here."

Looking for Bugs

Yesterday I saw an unusual activity at my front neighbor's tall evergreen.  A dozen of little birds were flying in and out of the high up branches.  They were about the size of house finches, but they flew in a different pattern.

When I came back with a camera lens, I found out they were a flock of Cedar Waxwings trying to dine on flying insects.

"We are looking for evening bugs."

"One bug!"

"Two bugs!"

"Just look at my elegant jump in the air."

The Last Day of Summer

The other day we went to the wetland one more time before the rainy season begins.  Snow berries were abundant for little birds and animals to nibble.

Some summer birds already left for south, but others were still around.

Great Egret:  "Just enjoy the left-over summer."

Spotted Sandpipers:  "A warm day for fun."

Common Yellowthroat, immature male:  "Last time you took me for someone else.
I am immature male; that is why it is difficult to identify.  Soon I will take off for south."

The Autumn Harvest Time

Our apple tree has some apples, but they are all worm eaten.   I used some of good ones for an apple cobbler.  When my friend gave me some of nice apples, I made apple sauce and dried apple slices.  They were all delicious.

Birds must be enjoying the fall harvest.  Lately several American Goldfinches stop by every morning.  Their bright yellow coat have now changed into their winter coat.

A female Goldfinch:  "My coat has more brown."

A male Goldfinch:  "My beak is brownish, too."

Do I know you?

One day at the nearby wetland, a few large white birds came flying toward me, closer and closer.

"I see something white.  Are you my kind?"

I was strolling around the reservoir.  The Great Egret must have spotted my white summer jacket from far away.  Upon arriving up above me, he was quite disappointed.

"Oh, no....  Ta, ta, I'm off to the other pond."

A Big Catch

Bewick's Wren is a brown/white colored bird with a beautiful song.  Today one showed up on the fence with a big bug.

"I can show you a big catch!"

"Here is a side view for you."

"I just garbled it up.  A great meal."
